Food for thought: Reality reprocessed & reborn

I was struck by this bit in a reflection by John Updike (who died last month) about his experience being on TV in 1985 (reprinted in the recent special issue of TV Guide):
"From within this messy room, with its floor full of snaking gray cables and its invisible scurry of behind-the-camera technicians, reality was being reprocessed and reborn . . . ."
