Food for thought: Stuff of life

From Soul Graffiti: Making a Life in the Way of Jesus by Mark Scandrette:
Aside from being entertaining, creative mediums play an important integrative role in our lives. There is a reason why we are moved by a scene from a movie or a lyric from a song or a character in a story. The arts serve to integrate the mind, soul, and body, connecting ideas with tangible realities in ways that inspire and motivate.

Many of formed our ideas about God in a rather abstract way, seeing spiritual beliefs more like math or science than literature or history. As if it's all about the facts--though by themselves the facts can't motivate us to action if they are divorced from the stuff of life. Creative expression helps us dwell in the intergrated space of truth statements grounded in our experiences and humanity.
