Teachable moments

My 4-year-old son and I were walking to pick up his older sister from school today, when a swirl of leaves crossed our path.

Son: Did you see that?!

Me: Yes!

Then grasping that a teachable moment was also crossing our path--

Me: Do you notice how you can't see the wind, but you can see what the wind does?

Son: Yes.

Me: Well, that's how God is--you can't see God, but you can see what he does. It's like God is invisible like the wind.

Son: But God isn't invisible.

Me: What do you mean? Can you see God?

Son: He lives in our hearts, that's why you can't see him

Me: Oh. Hmm. Good point.

Pauses a moment, then curious as to what he'll say to this one:

Me: And what does God do in our hearts?

Immediately, and in a very matter-of-fact "of course" sort of way:

Son: He makes things better.

Huh. Teachable moment indeed.
