Presidents and pop culture

Heh, when I got back from my trip to Virginia, I read this GetReligion post on the buzz surrounding the possibility of actor and recent U.S. congressman (1994-2003) Fred Thompson running for the U.S. president in 2008. Interestingly, not more than a week before, some of my Republican friends were lamenting (as GR’s Daniel Pulliam notes common among party members) the lack of good presidential candidates in the conservative party and Thompson’s name floated up among them with some enthusiasm. It’s always an interesting thing to this pop-culture blog when actors turn politicians (Gipper to president, Gopher to congressman, Terminator to governor)—but I think this will be the first currently employed actor (Law & Order) to go for the U.S. presidency, right? Heh, it definitely makes for a more interesting election season.

Added: Heh, this site has a list of 16 actors gone politicians from around the world--check it out. And if you're in the U.S., you can take this quiz to see how well you know your actors turned politicians.
