Inauguration 2009

Those are the heads of my 10-year-old daughter and five-year-old son watching the inauguration of now President Barack Obama. It is an historic day, one we want them to be able to remember. As we watched the Bushes greet the Obamas at the White House, saw them all travel to the Capitol and listened to the speakers during the inauguration ceremony, I was moved by the gracious, eloquent and peaceful transfer of leadership and power--and I particularly enjoyed poet Elizabeth Alexander's final words to the poem she penned for the occasion, a poem which, among other things, mused upon the power of words in our lives:
What if the mightiest word is love, love beyond marital, filial, national. Love that casts a widening pool of light. Love with no need to preempt grievance.

In today’s sharp sparkle, this winter air, anything can be made, any sentence begun.

On the brink, on the brim, on the cusp — praise song for walking forward in that light.
