'Reaping' more God-talk--or not?

A film this blog heard about eons ago (okay, it’s only been a few months) has now got a web site and full-fledged trailer. What’s The Reaping about? A “former Christian missionary who lost her faith after her family was tragically killed, and has since become a world renowned expert in disproving religious phenomena. But when she investigates a small Louisiana town that is suffering from what appear to be the Biblical plagues, she realizes that science cannot explain what is happening and she must regain her faith to combat the dark forces threatening the community.” What makes this film different from any other horror film out there? It’s got Hilary Swank. And the trailer is full of the Old Testament plague language straight from the story of Moses. The question is, will this film do a better of job than the The Mummy (which, incidentally, for no redeeming reason I can determine, I count as one of my favorite films of all time) of using all that God-talk and biblical reference, or will it be the same weak allusion? We’ve got awhile to wait before we find out—the film was pushed back from a summer release to Nov. 8.
