I loved the film. It didn't give me the feeling I was watching a horror film into the 2nd part of the film.
The slasher character actually fits the philosophical and religious aspect of the story: alone with God, all to Heaven, etc. And it does not take up a big part of the film, the ending scenes are not ruined, as is the plot. Just a very good science fiction adventure.

I found the characters in The Book of Eli to be quite cliched - especially Gary Oldman's villain. I don't know if it would qualify as a "road film" but The Secret of Kells deals with the same issues of the different attitudes that people have to a book that is the greatest treasure with much more depth and style, and without resorting to a cheap twist at the end.

It took awhile, but it's done. Happy reading.....

Fantastic, Carmen! Not only do I completely agree with the assessment of the movie, but WOW, what a great reminder about our biblical viewpoint!! I think this became so important for me when I had children... I didnt want to pass God on to them like a game of telephone. Those before me passed their twists on theology to me based on what they heard or percieved to hear, and then I would pass what I percieved Him to be to fit my needs, getting farther from the truth. And just like you said, I am convinced we do this completely unintenionally, but non the less... it has severe consequences when it comes to absolute truth. Thank God for grace, and thank God for the bible, that we can go back and back and back and back to refresh ourselves of the truth! Thanks for this post, you always amaze me ;)

mixed feelings. well shot, Jennifer Lawrence was fantastic, felt shorter than 2.5 hours, i didn't get bored, i cried when Rue died. but it just doesn't stack up to the book (how could it?!). i agree with John Granger (see post i put up today for a link) that the changes the director made have changed the focus of the story (which might explain why i wished i had more connection to Katniss and Peeta than i did). what about you?!

I agree--I've always thought dystopian fiction was a version of imagine the worst, and if you could make it through that and still have hope, then you don't have to be afraid of anything. Imagining the worst scenarios sorta deliver you from all your fears. But what did you think of the movie versus the book?

As you doubtless know from occasional previous comments, I follow your in the open space blog occassionally, being a bit of a fan of science fiction and a little horror myself, and a former Christian to boot. =).

I wanted to let you know about something, and it feels really wierd to do it in a comment on a mostly unrelated post, but I couldn't find a "contact me" button anywhere! =)

I just wanted to say I'd love you to check out a documentary which recently came out via video on demand. I thought you might find it intriguing, and I actually play a small part in it as well. It's called "Holy Rollers", and it's the true story of the biggest and best-funded blackjack team in the U.S., composed (almost) entirely of Christians (as it happens I was the one not-Christian member of the team).

You can find it at holyrollersthemovie.com, and also it's available there to buy, as well as available to buy or stream at amazon, itunes, and I think a few other places.
