Good days

Yesterday, I stood in a barbershop while my five-year-old son was getting his new-school-year haircut, and I couldn’t stop grinning: On the shop’s big screen television was Governor Sarah Palin giving her speech after being announced as the vice presidential candidate for the Republican party. I nudged my 10-year-old daughter and told her to pay attention. This is history, I told her—again.

This has to be one of the most amazing, interesting, dramatic, wonderful presidential races in history. More than once this past year, I have been able to tell my daughter to pay attention, to remember a day when history was made. I resonate with Ken’s reflections at C-Orthodoxy:
I generally avoid politics around here (except the occasional joke), but I did want to take a moment to register my congratulations to both Democratic and Republican parties for taking truly historic steps in their nominations. If reports are true that McCain has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential candidate, that means that this November we are guaranteed to elect either a black President or a female Vice President.
Like Ken, I have been wary of both political parties. But, here-and-now, this is exhilarating and more than encouraging. There is lots I like about both Senator Barak Obama and Palin, and I for one am glad to see each of them in the arena. And I’m glad my children see this. And I hope that by the time they reach my age it is something that’s taken for granted.
