Why a blog?

On the recommendations of some friends, I’ve started this blog. I think they’re just tired of getting so many e-mails from me everyday, but, truthfully, I’ve been thinking about it anyway.

I struggled to come up with a name, but settled on “in the open space”, a reference to the Apostle Paul’s experience at the Areopagus (a meeting place of philosphers and those interested in "the latest ideas") in Athens. Acts 17 defines much of the way I write about and approach the culture and world around me. Paul flushed out various parts of Greek culture that reflected God and brought those reflections into the open space. He used those reflections like stepping stones to lead people to the truth of God.

A word of warning: I won’t be as organized in this open space as Paul was in the Areopagus. My observations are much more, er, random (to put a good spin on it). On a normal day, I often jump from the LA Times to Sci-Fi’s Battlestar Galactica or ABC’s Lost, from religion columnist Terry Mattingly to New York Times editorials, from Christianity Today to Time Magazine, from Uganda to China, from my kids to movie stars and politicians. You get the idea.

So, to my friends, may this blog keep your in-boxes much more manageable. To others out there, enjoy.

Blessings.
